Fair is the Rose: English and Italian Songs for Voice and Viols

Consort songs are just what the term suggests: songs accompanied by a consort of viols; it’s the best of both worlds. The Elizabethans invented the form, and the Jacobeans and some foreigners took it further, until, like all great English chamber music, it was killed off by the civil war (the English one).

Join us for a program of delightful and heartrending songs for soprano and viol–from classic consort songs by Byrd and Gibbons, to Monteverdi’s gorgeous Lamento della Ninfa, we’ll explore the interplay of text and melody in these glorious pieces.
