Hallifax & Jeffrey (viols) with Cynthia Black (violin) and Katherine Heater (harpsichord):
Paris in the ’20s – music by Couperin, Marais, and more
Paris was the place to be in the 1720s, especially if you were a viol player, a harpsichordist, violinist, and a royalist, or at least willing to take the monarch’s money.
Louis XIV had famously centralized the French aristocracy, making them all live in or near Paris, so there were plenty of wealthy employers. Musicians flourished, notably Louis Couperin and Marin Marais.
This program will include Couperin’s lovely third “Concert Royal”, Marais’ programmatic”Labyrinthe”, the dreamlike “Sonnerie de Sainte Genevieve Du Mont” among other pieces.
