“Sweeter than Roses”
Les Violettes: Corey Carleton, soprano; Violet Grgich, keyboards; and Colin Shipman, viola da gamba
Songs and Instrumental Music by Purcell and his French Admirers
Purcell, the last truly great English musician, had no peers, and died young. Music by English composers never again reached the heights he took it to.
But in France, composers inspired by new styles of singing (and only covertly interested in Italian music), continued to develop great music at the Bourbon court.
This program, inspired by the justly famous Purcell songs “Sweeter than Roses” and “An Evening Hymn”, will also feature canatatas by Clerambault and Bousset, and a suite for viol by one of Barefoot’s personal deities, the great Marin Marais.
