Marteau Quartet plays Schubert – October 28, 2011

Friday October 28, 2011

MARTEAU STRING QUARTET (Adam LaMotte, Greg Ewer, violins; Hillary Schoap, viola; and Tanya Tomkins, cello):

Plays

String Quartet in D minor “Death and the Maiden” and other quartets by Franz Schubert
In 1824, at the age of 27, Franz Schubert wrote his famous quartet after a serious illness, and it has become a cornerstone of the repertoire ever since. The piece gets its name from the theme of the 2nd movement, which is a series of variations on a song Schubert wrote in 1817.

The Marteau Quartet, comprised of four consummate musicians who play in both the period and modern styles, strives to recreate the sound aesthetic of romantic-era quartets. Embarking upon uncharted territory, the Marteau Quartet bridges the gap between historically-informed ensembles and so-called modern ensembles by playing romantic-era music on period instruments.
